The Moon and the Tides
People who live near the coasts are familiar with the periodic rise and fall of the oceans we call the tides. The tides are caused by the gravitational force of attraction of the moon and the sun. The highest high tides and lowest low tides are called spring tides. They occur about twice a month near the full and new moon phases. In these events, the sun, moon, and earth are all aligned.
When the sun and the moon are at right angles at the first quarter and last quarter phases, the changes in tide water level are smaller. These smaller tides are called the neap tides.
