The Phases of the Moon and Eclipses

This week we are finishing up lunar phases and eclipses and solar eclipses.  Additionally, we will investigate how the moon affects the tides.  That is to say, the rise and fall of the oceans that occur twice daily, near the shorelines.

This week I will begin working with the earth science review book.  I will need students to purchase the book from the department office in room 305.  The cost of the review book is $13.00.  We will begin doing homework from the book toward the end of the week.

Our semester midterm exam is scheduled for Tuesday, November 23, 2010.  Topics on the exam will will include everything we have learned since September:
  • Observations and Inferences
  • Metric System Conversions
  • Measurements of Density, Mass, and Volume
  • Scientific Notation
  • The Big Bang Theory
  • Classification of Stars
  • Our Solar System
  • Eccentricity of Planetary Orbits
  • Earth's Path around the Sun
  • The Seasons and Insolation
  • Electromagnetic Spectrum
  • Phases of the Moon
  • Lunar and Solar Eclipses
  • Lunar Effects on Ocean Tides
