Circumference of the Earth

This week we will continue with our work on solar time and longitudinal positions on the surface of the earth. We will also begin to discuss our understanding of Earth as a sphere and those responsible for our understanding. In particular we will discuss individuals such as Eratosthenes.

Eratosthenes of Cyrene (276 BC - 194 BC) was a Greek mathematician, poet, athlete, geographer and astronomer. He made several discoveries and inventions including a system of latitude and longitude. He was the first person to calculate the circumference of the Earth (with remarkable accuracy).
