Geologic Time Scale

In the late 18th and 19th centuries, geologists in Europe discovered that rock formations could often be identified by the fossils contained in the rocks.

Over the years, a relative scale of geologic time was created based on the fossils. The time units were based by the kinds of fossils and where they were found. However the exact age of the rocks would not be known for years to come.
